The journey to Contao 5 (#1)

This "travelogue" gives you an insight into my everyday life with Isotope eCommerce.

Last week, we had our regular Contao developer meeting (read the news). In addition to working on Contao 6, we (the Contao Core Team) also fixed some issues with 5.7.0 that affected Isotope eCommerce. Therefore, Isotope will only be compatible with Contao 5.7.1 (assuming we don't find any more issues).

Regarding the development status: I'm currently struggling with rebuilding the checkout process. After talking to Sebastian, I redesigned everything in a much smarter way. You select the shipping address within the shipping method because without shipping (e.g., for pickup), a shipping address doesn't make sense. After a day of work, we realized during review that it's not possible to display the shipping method if you don't know where to deliver. So back to step 1 🤦‍♂️

Without a checkout process, Isotope is currently a product catalog. I have already successfully implemented it in Contao 5.7 at www.hebgo.ch. I also updated a system from Contao 4.13 to Contao 5.7 for a fundraising participant. The effort involved was like 2-3 hours (for me, someone familiar with the new templates). Plus probably 4-6 hours of fixing Isotope – which hopefully won't be necessary every time! Further test systems will follow in the next few days & weeks.

We are approaching a public beta – as soon as the checkout process is working!

About Andreas Schempp

Andreas developed Isotope eCommerce during the Ötzi era and eventually took on the role of lead developer. His focus is on lines of code, which is why you won't read much from him. Professionally, he has to deal with Yanick at terminal42.
